Boathouse Restoration starts this Summer!
Boathouse Restoration Project

Some months ago, CMI sought Community Preservation Act funding to restore our beautiful boathouse so that it, and CMI, would be well-positioned to maintain the availability of our rowing and wooden boat repair programs to the community for years to come.  Town Meeting supported our cause and, this Spring, the restoration bid was awarded.   Work is targeted to begin at the end our Summer Season in August 2009!

The work will maintain the historic look and character of our building, but restore the structural soundness in the historic tradition of the lifesaving station that once graced this beautiful part of Cohasset Harbor. The work will include a structurally reinforced roof with new wooden shingles, a much improved loft for boat and equipment storage, insulation so that the building can be used more comfortably in the cool months, and electrical outlets placed such that wooden boat repair can be conducted more safely and conveniently.  In addition, we will ensure that the unusual former privy used by occupants from an earlier era remains firmly attached to the Government Island side of the building.

CMI will stay in operation during the restoration which is expected to take 6-10 weeks.  We will maintain essential equipment such as oars, rowmasters, life jackets etc in a 20' storage pod nearby.

We are grateful to the voters of Cohasset for enabling this project, and to Bill Griffin, Manager for the Town of Cohasset, for working diligently through the municipal procurement & bidding process to get us to this point.  Patrick Guthrie and Lyne Spencer of the Architecture Firm of Menders, Torrey & Spencer Inc have done a great job on the plans and the bid specifications. We are looking forward to applying the first shingle!

Feel free to contact George Baumgarten if you have any questions about this project
