Adult Rowing

Welcome to Cohasset Maritime Institute’s Adult Summer Rowing Program! This site is where you may register for Learn-To-Row and our Adult Seasonal rowing. Please note that youth summer rowing (entering 7th grade and higher) is a separate registration.

Rowers of any and all experience levels are welcome at CMI!

You may sign up with friends to make up a crew,
or we will assign you to crews with compatible rowers.

Learn to Row and test the waters!

If you haven’t rowed with CMI and want to see what it is all about, try our four-session Learn-To-Row (“LTR”) program. We find that our LTR participants enjoy learning with each other and pick up rowing skills very quickly.

When you register, you will be asked to pick 6 possible times for your four sessions in this two-week period. We will do our best to assign you to your preferred LTR sessions (on four separate days).  These sessions begin on May 20, 2017.

When you come to the end of your LTR sessions and you enjoyed the experience, we encourage you to join the seasonal program. Then you will be placed in boats with compatible rowers.

Adult Seasonal Rowing

The adult rowing season is Sunday, May 21 – Sunday, August 20. Rowing is offered Monday – Thursday in the early morning, afternoon-evenings and on weekend mornings. Please register no later than Sunday, May 7th at 11pm to be included in the initial session assignment process.  Those registering after May 7 will be slotted on a best efforts basis.  If demand for a rowing time session exceeds the number of available boats, we will “pull names out of a hat” from those crews/rowers who have signed up by May 7.  That said, it is *crucial* that you list your choices when you register.

Typically, adults row twice a week. Times are listed below.

When you register, you’ll be asked for your 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th choices of day/time sessions, and to list who else might be rowing with you, if you have pre-arrangements.

We will not offer sessions if there are not enough rowers for that time. This season, we are adjusting weekend times in order to balance activity at the boat ramp.

The available slots, for all experience levels, are as follows:

Monday – Thursdays

4 boats @ 6-7:30am | 7:30-9am | 9-10:30am | 5-6:30pm | 6:30-8pm

Saturday – Sundays
2 boats @ 6-7:30am | 7:30-9am | 9-10:30am | 10:30am-12pm
2 boats @ 6:30-8am | 8-9:30am | 9:30-11am

  • Groups of 6 or more rowers may register for 3 sessions per week.  During the season, these groups must coordinate amongst themselves who rows each day.

CMI Safety Policy & Rowing Etiquette

CMI’s Safety Policy applies to every participant in a CMI rowing program.  Please click the link and take a moment to read it.  The Safety Policy includes the requirement to sign a USRowing Waiver, minimum levels of rowing fitness and expectations for courtesy & sportsmanship.

Program Fees

Seasonal adult rowing fee is $385.  This covers use of all boats plus the indoor rowing machines in the boathouse. Most rowers row in two scheduled 90 minute sessions per week in a Four.  Some members row less, some more, depending upon preference and schedule. New this year, US Rowing is charging a fee for each rower’s waiver, and CMI is adjusting fees by $10 from 2015 to cover the waiver.

Learn to Row is $85 and covers up to four 90 minute instructional sessions to learn to row in a Four, plus the US Rowing waiver. This LTR fee can be applied toward the full season if the rower desires to continue rowing. The  Learn-to-row Add-on seasonal fee is $300 for the remainder of the season.

Substitute Rower fee is $150 for the season and puts you on the online Substitute List to row in a boat when a scheduled rower is not able to row at their appointed time.  CMI will publish a Substitute List that will be shared with all crews. Crews/ rowers are responsible for contacting substitutes using the Substitute List.

Sculling fee is $195 for experienced rowers who row CMI’s fleet of sculling boats only and includes the waiver fee.   Experience is subject to certification by CMI.

Payments for fees may be paid by credit card, Paypal, or check.  Click the Register Now link below to get started!

Come to our Open House Saturday, April 22nd 9-11am!

Please drop in to our Open House on April 22 between 9-11 at the CMI Boathouse at 40 Parker Avenue to meet other rowers, ask questions, see the boats, and take a spin on a rowing machine. The Open House is a great opportunity to coordinate and connect with other rowers and, for returning rowers, to organize a crew.

Note:  Because registration must be completed online, it is not necessary to come to the Open House for that purpose. Feel free to contact CMI with questions.

Boats, Rowing and Scheduling

We have several one-person (“singles”) and two-person (“doubles”) boats, plus five 4-person (“fours”) boats, all specially designed for ocean rowing in the waters off Cohasset

Rowers are assigned two sessions per week in cox’d Fours.  Time slots are assigned for the season by the CMI Staff based on the members’ time preferences (on a best efforts basis) from the registration.  Some members form their own groups of four or more, with scheduling amongst themselves to account for work schedules, vacations, etc. The CMI Program Director will assist rowers new to CMI join other rowers with similar interests and abilities.

Rowers must be pre-qualified for use of singles and doubles, which are then available first come first serve during CMI operating hours.
