Cohasset Maritime Institute Policy and Safety
Protocols:
CMI Alden Single and Double Shells
Policy Statement
CMI recognizes that the availability of rowing Alden shells provides
its members with wonderful opportunities to expand their rowing options
in Cohasset waters. CMI also recognizes the inherent safety risks associated
with the use of these shells. Therefore, this statement has been drafted
with the express purpose of creating a policy intended to maximize the
safety of its Alden-rowing members.
Alden Eligibility
- Aldens may only be used by CMI members in good standing.
- Senior members of CMI (club rowers who have 2 or
more years of CMI membership and CMI rowing experience) may use Alden
Shells during club hours.
- Non-Senior members of CMI (club rowers with fewer
than 2 years of CMI membership and SMI rowing experience) must participate
in a club Alden clinic to be eligible to use club Alden shells.
- Non-Senior members of CMI may only use Alden shells
during club hours, unless accompanied by a senior member of CMI who
has authorization to use club Aldens outside of club hours.
Equipment Usage and Safety Protocols
- All Alden rowers must thoroughly and accurately complete
a float plan whenever using an Alden.
- All Alden rowers must thoroughly check equipment for
any damage or potential problems before setting out.
- Upon return, all Alden rowers must properly store,
clean, and repair, if necessary, all equipment used. Any repairs needed
must be logged in the float plan and attended to in a timely fashion.
- All Alden rowers must supply, and have with them
in their shell or on their person while rowing, the following safety
items:
bailer, whistle, marine radio or cell phone properly stored in a weather
proof container, and life jacket (pfd).
- All Alden rowers must remain within Greater Cohasset
Harbor at all times. Cohasset Harbor is defined as an imaginary line
between Whitehead and the Glades. High winds generating swells or chop
of 1-2' dictate that rowers may not venture past Whitehead and the #11
Can (green) marking the entrance to Cohasset harbor.
- Alden rowers wishing to venture past this imaginary
line may only do so when accompanied by a safety vessel such as a CMI
sweep crew, or two or more Alden craft (a minimum of 3 Alden vessels)
including a Senior CMI Alden rower.
